Producing electronics incorporating cost effective EMC is not an easy task for any manufacturer. The automotive supply chain is typical of this, constantly under pressure to meet the requirements of their customers who increasingly push the responsibility for EMC on to them. This seminar will be of interest to any manufacturer who designs or incorporates electronics into their product and would like an overview of the current state of EMC and some of the solutions that are now available.
Welcome to the Wolfson Centre – Richard Jones
A brief overview of the Centre activities with regard to EMC and product approval.
The new Automotive Directive 2004/104/EC – Chris Andrews, MIRA
Chris originally joined MIRA in 1995, and after gaining his MSc in EMC, managed MIRA’s RFI Lab. Chris then moved to the US to work as an EMC consultant and managed to fit in a law degree specialising in product liability at the same time! He has now re-joined MIRA to take on the challenge of leading MIRA’s certification service.
Transient Pulses – Andy Perkins, Schaffner Ltd
Andy Perkins of Schaffner (UK) will explain the principles and standards relating to transient and ESD testing as applied to automotive products. Andy says “he has been involved with EMC for more years than he wishes to admit, and is known by more people than he’d care to remember!”
Overview of RF EMC Testing – John Dearing, Schaffner Ltd
John Dearing of Schaffner will outline the fundamental difference between RF immunity testing for the automotive industry compared to the more familiar commercial products. He will explain the basic differences in the test standards and techniques used. John is product manager for the Schaffner power amplifier and Compliance 3 test software. John worked originally designing TWT amplifiers and for the last 14 years has been involved in the RF EMC market with both Chase EMC and Schaffner.
Modelling for EMC Design – Paul Duxbury, Flomerics Ltd
This talk will discuss how through the use of EMC modelling, it is possible to investigate and tackle EMC issues early in the design process before a physical prototype is available for testing. Paul has been with Flomerics for 5 years and, as Senior EM Engineer, has responsibility for supporting the users of Flomerics’ electromagnetic modelling tools. Prior to joining Flomerics, he spent 5 years working as an EMC engineer for BSi and IFR.
Welsh Automotive Forum – Tim Williams
Tim Williams the Chief Executive of WAF will talk about the activity of the Forum. Industry led and industry driven, the Welsh Automotive Forum is the authoritative voice of the automotive industry in Wales. It serves as the conduit, harnessing all partners, ensuring that a common approach is adopted in developing and promoting knowledge and best practice to enable the sector to meet the challenge of world-class competitiveness.
